Spot the Differences

Help โ€” Spot the Differences

Two versions of the same painting, side by side or flipping between them. One is the original, the other has a handful of details edited by hand. Find every one โ€” each hit counts.

Not every difference means something

Every difference you find comes with a caption. Sometimes it is real symbolism from that specific painting, properly explained. Sometimes the hidden detail carries no historical weight at all and the caption is just a joke โ€” and that is stated plainly, we do not invent meaning to pad the count. Both kinds count the same toward finishing the painting.

The quiz is optional

Some paintings have a short quiz at the end, to see if it stuck. You can turn this on or off on the home screen before playing โ€” the preference is saved only in your own browser, it never changes for anyone else.

Why the ranking requires login

You can play any painting without an account. But the "Top Players of the Month" board only counts time from people who are logged in โ€” without that, there is no way to know who is who, and a ranking that accepts any name is worthless. Time is measured by the server clock from the moment the round starts, not by whatever the player's own browser claims happened.

Where the paintings come from

Public-domain works only, most of them via Wikimedia Commons โ€” each one's credit appears above the painting. The edit itself (what changes between the two versions) is always done by hand, one image at a time.
